In 1961 Eleni Vernadaki joined Art Group A which had been set up at the beginning of the year by Yannis Haïnis, Kostas Klouvatos, Demosthenes Kokkinidis, Kosmas Xenakis, Panos Sarafianos, Yannis Maltezos, Emilios Freris and Cleo Bostantzoglou-Tripou, with the aim of introducing art to the general public. The group held its meetings in Vernadaki’s studio on Solonos Street and she was also its honorary treasurer.
From then on and until 1967 – when the group ceased to operate – Vernadaki would take part in most of Art Group A’s exhibitions in Athens and elsewhere.
In her personal archive Vernadaki has a wealth of material relating to the group’s activities, including lists of members and friends, financial contributions, expenses incurred in organizing exhibitions, memoranda to public authorities, etc.
In 1976 Vernadaki became active in another artistic collective, the Modern Art Society (SYST), of which she was a founding member and a board member from 1984 to 1986.
